graduates, today, we still find ourselves in the same morass of exclusion and intolerance i experienced all those years ago. the high degree of acrimony is unyielding and discouraging, but i want to make sure you hear this: discouragement doesnsquo;t have to be debilitating. if anything, discouragement should drive you to open your own doors and design your own future.
and just remember when you open those doors, there will be people on the other side. some of them will be cheerleaders, and some of them will be critics. the challenges you face on your uphill climb will often come with an audience, because the reality is this: adversity doesnsquo;t happen always in private.

our administration is working to address the high cost of childcare in the united states which currently outstrips housing expenses and state college tuition in much of the country. it cannot be too expensive for the modern working family to have children.

in some important ways, my generation has failed you in this regard. we spent too much time debating. we've been too focused on the fight and not focused enough on progress. and you don't need to look far to find an example of that failure. here today, in this very place, in an arena where thousands once found desperate shelter from a 100-year disaster, the kind that seem to be happening more and more frequently, i don't think we can talk about who we are as people and what we owe to one another without talking about climate change.
